Google Search Central’s guide AI features and your website is blunt: the best practices for SEO still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode. There are no extra requirements to appear in those features, and no special optimizations on top of Search.
That is the update. Appearing in Google’s AI features is still SEO — crawlable, useful, people-first pages. It is not a side sport you buy instead of SEO, and it is not a silo you label “AEO” and run on its own.
In July we wrote that AI answers had moved to the front of search. What has not changed is the job: be a source Google can quote. What Google has now made explicit is how you become eligible: the same technical and people-first bar as the rest of Search.
What Google actually said
To show up as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Google’s words: there are no additional technical requirements.
You do not need a new machine-readable file, an “AI text file,” or extra markup to appear. There is also no special schema.org type you add just for these features. If you use structured data, it should match the text people can already read on the page — the same rule as the rest of SEO.
Google also repeats the fundamentals: allow crawling, make pages findable with internal links, put important content in text, and write helpful, reliable, people-first content.
None of that is a new product. It is SEO, applied where the answer is assembled.
Query fan-out is why a labeled AEO silo loses
AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out: one question becomes several related searches across subtopics and data sources. While the response is being written, Google can pull in a wider set of supporting pages than a classic ten-blue-links query.
So the page that wins is not the one titled for a single head term, or the one parked in an “AEO” folder with a unique file format. It is the page that actually answers the related questions a fan-out will run — with extractable answers a model can lift and attribute.
AEO and GEO are still useful names for channels and outcomes — being the answer, being a cited source, showing up in Google, maps, and assistants. They are not a second company and not a substitute for SEO. The longer AEO & GEO guide is the channel playbook. This post is Google’s line on Google’s own AI features: still SEO.
What still is (and what we sell)
What still is: topical depth, clear definitions, questions answered in plain language, technical eligibility to be crawled and shown with a snippet, and a human who will not publish unsupervised fluff.
That is why RevRocket sells SEO & AEO, not “Agentic SEO” as the firm name, and not an unsupervised agent. How we work is the loop: research → suggest → configure → report. Humans decide what goes live. We don’t let AI run unsupervised.
MERLIN is one tool that can run inside that loop. It is not the platform, not the company, and not this thesis.
If you want the commercial offer — month-to-month SEO & AEO, Launch / Boost / Orbit — that lives on pricing. This post is the Google update, not a new service.
