Google AI Mode is the part of Search where you ask a question in plain words and get an answer back, written by AI, with links and places to go next. You can follow up the way you would with a person. Google started testing it in Labs in March 2025 (Google’s announcement) and rolled it out to everyone in the U.S. in May 2025 (Google I/O 2025 update).
Interest in “google ai mode” on Google Trends has climbed over the past year. Most of those searchers are curious consumers, not business owners. But they are your customers, and some of them are asking AI Mode who to call. Here is what that means for a local business, and what to change now.
How is AI Mode different from regular Google search?
Short answer: Regular search gives you a list of links and a map. AI Mode writes an answer, breaks your question into smaller searches behind the scenes, and links to the sources it used.
Google calls the technique “query fan-out”: AI Mode splits a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once to build the answer (Google Search Central). So a question like “who can replace my electrical panel this week near St. Pete, and roughly what does it cost?” turns into several searches about panel replacement, local electricians, availability and pricing. The page that wins is the one that answers those smaller questions clearly.
This is related to, but not the same as, AI Overviews, the AI summary at the top of a normal results page. We wrote about that shift in Google Just Made AI the Default for Every Search.
Does AI Mode show the Map Pack?
Short answer: It can name local businesses next to its answer, but what appears changes by query and over time. Test your own key searches.
Google has said AI Mode is built to help with local tasks too, naming restaurant reservations and local appointments among the first (Google I/O 2025 update). The layout of local answers keeps changing as Google updates the feature, and we won’t pretend there is a fixed formula. What does not change is where the information comes from.
Try it yourself: open AI Mode and ask the three questions a customer would ask before calling you. Note who it names and what it says about them. That list is your real competition in AI search.
Where does AI Mode get information about local businesses?
Short answer: From the same sources as Google Search: your Google Business Profile, your website, your reviews, and other sites that mention you.
Google’s guidance for site owners is direct: the SEO basics still apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, and one item on its short list is “Checking that your Merchant Center and Business Profile information is up-to-date” (AI features and your website). For a local business, the profile is the record Google trusts most about your hours, services, location and reputation.
- Google Business Profile. Categories, services, hours, service areas, photos, posts and the Q&A.
- Reviews. What customers say, and what you say back. Specific reviews (“fixed our panel the same day”) give an AI answer something concrete to repeat.
- Your website. Service pages, pricing explanations, FAQs and town pages that answer real questions in plain text.
- Mentions elsewhere. Local news, directories, associations and partners that name you consistently.
What should a local business change now?
Short answer: Nothing exotic. Tighten your Google Business Profile, answer real customer questions on your site, keep earning reviews, and check how AI Mode describes you each month.
- Fill every field on your Google Business Profile and keep hours, services and service areas current. Post weekly.
- Write one page per real question. “How much does a panel upgrade cost?” “Do you repair or replace a roof after hail?” Answer in the first two sentences, then explain.
- Keep your business details identical everywhere. Name, address, phone, website.
- Ask for reviews after every good job and reply to every one.
- Make sure Google can crawl and index your pages. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a link in AI Mode. That is the whole technical requirement.
- Track a short list of buyer questions. Check each month whether AI Mode and other assistants name you. Treat every miss as a page to write or fix.
Google is clear that there is no special AI file or schema to add (Google Search Central). We covered that statement in Google Says AEO Isn’t a Separate Game. If someone sells you a secret AI Mode trick, ask them to show you where Google says so.
A worked example: one question, three answers
Picture a homeowner who asks AI Mode: “My AC is blowing warm air. Who can come out today near me, and is it worth repairing a 12-year-old unit?” That one question hides at least three smaller ones: which local HVAC companies offer same-day service, what usually causes warm air, and when repair stops making sense.
The business that gets named is the one whose profile says “same-day service” in its services and hours, whose reviews mention fast visits, and whose site has a plain page on repair versus replacement. None of that is new SEO work. It is the same work that helps you in the Map Pack, organized around the questions people actually ask.
Will AI Mode cut my website traffic?
Short answer: Some informational clicks will go away. Local buyers still need to call, book or visit someone, and AI Mode links to the businesses it names.
Clicks from AI Mode are counted in Search Console’s Performance report, under the Web search type, together with regular search (Google Search Central). They are not broken out separately, so watch calls, direction requests and form fills alongside clicks. For a local business, being the name in the answer can matter more than the click itself. That idea is the core of what being the answer looks like for a service business.
How we handle AI Mode for clients
We don’t sell AI Mode as a separate service. It sits inside the local work: Google Business Profile management, review replies, answer-ready pages and a monthly check on the buyer questions we track for each client. If you want the AI side in depth, see our AEO // GEO services. If you want to see what a monthly package includes, read what a small business SEO package should include.
Frequently asked questions
What is Google AI Mode?
AI Mode is a search experience inside Google that answers in a conversation instead of a list of links. You can ask long questions and follow-ups. Google launched it in Labs in March 2025 and rolled it out to everyone in the U.S. in May 2025.
Does AI Mode show the Map Pack?
It can show local businesses alongside its answer, but the layout varies by query and keeps changing as Google updates the feature. Check your own key searches in AI Mode to see what customers see.
Where does AI Mode get information about my business?
From the same places Google Search uses: your Google Business Profile, your website, reviews, and other pages on the web that mention you. Google tells site owners to keep their Business Profile information up to date for its AI features.
Do I need special markup or an AI file to show up in AI Mode?
No. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and the usual SEO basics apply.
How do I know if AI Mode is sending me traffic?
Google counts clicks from AI Mode in the Search Console Performance report under the Web search type, mixed in with regular search. Track calls and form fills too, because many local buyers act without clicking through.
